Wednesday, September 5, 2007 - 7:00 p.m.

CITIZENS ARE INVITED TO MAKE COMMENTS ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA USING THE CARDS LOCATED NEXT TO THE AGENDAS. A BOARD MEMBER WILL RESPOND TO ALL WRITTEN COMMENTS WITHIN A WEEK.

7:00 Call to Order

Present: Mrs. Sue Pullar, Mrs. Helene Cass, Mrs. Martha Leathe, Dr. William

Gilbert, Mr. Ralph Stevens, Mrs. Ellen Breed, Dr. Jeffrey Bearden and Ms. Gail Sullivan

Also Present: Mr. Randy Stewart , Mrs. Vicki Stewart, Dr. Carole Smith, Mr. Jerry Burnell, Mr. John Caverly, Ms. Margaret Shepherd, Mr. Paul

Mehlhorn, and interested members of the public and press

Scheduled Audience to the Public: None

Members of the public who wish to schedule an audience with the board should contact the Superintendent of Schools three days in advance of a meeting.

Report of the Secretary:

1. Consideration and action to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Motion: Mrs. Pullar Second: Mrs. Breed Vote: 6-0

2. Consideration and action to approve the minutes of the Special Meeting of August 30, 2007.

Motion: Mrs. Breed Second: Mr. Stevens Vote: 4-0 (Mrs. Cass and Mrs. Pullar abstained)

Report of the Chairperson:

Mrs. Cass said that the chair luncheon will be held during the last week of September.

Report of the Superintendent:

1. Consolidation Update: Dr. Bearden noted that as of August 31, all districts were required to file a Notice of Intent in regard to consolidation. Approximately 30 districts filed an alternative plan. Dr. Bearden said that he met with MSAD 60 about sharing some services to offset the subsidy cuts. The list of potential shared services includes: adult education, transportation, custodial supplies, maintenance, technology, special education, gifted and talented program, alternative education and food service.

Mr. Stevens suggested that we explore the possibility of forming a consortium for purchasing. Mrs. Pullar suggested that we explore combining extracurricular teams with other districts.

2. Opening of School - Report from Building Principals

Mrs. Stewart said that it was the best opening the Central School ever had. She said she witnessed skills that they teach in "Responsive Classroom" program being demonstrated by students. They had 460 students on opening day. She said the gym lights are awesome. Mr. Burnell said they started school with 384 students. They opened the day with an assembly. Mr. Burnell talked about the culture of the Marshwood Great Works School. Later on he said he saw a student eating lunch alone and then two students went over and joined the first student. Mr. Caverly said that it was an awesome day. The entire school gathered together and read the Middle School's mission statement. They had 553 students registered. Ms. Shepherd said that it was a great opening day at Eliot Elementary School. The PTO had painted and decorated the teachers' lounge so it looked wonderful. They started the year with 340 students. Mr. Mehlhorn said that it was the best opening day that he could ever remember at Marshwood High School. He said that the cafeteria was the cleanest it's ever been at the end of all the lunches. They had 827 students registered.

Correspondence:

We received a letter from the American Heart Association thanking Central School for raising over $6,000 through the "Jump Rope for Heart" event.

Report of the Committees:

1. Report of the Finance and Facilities Committee: None

2. Report of the Educational Policy Committee: None, they will meet in 2 weeks

3. Report of the Community Relations Committee: We will meet at 6 pm on September 19th

1. Consideration and action to approve the School Board goals for 2007-2008.
