Summer Reading Suggestions for Students Entering 4th and 5th Grades
Summer is a great time to read with your son or daughter. Keep up the learning momentum with frequent, informal reading sessions throughout the summer. Not only will you have fun with your child, but you will keep him or her on the path to success for September! Model your love of reading by sharing what you're reading with your children. Remember to treat reading as a fun, desirable activity, and not a chore to accomplish before heading out for a summer adventure.
Strategies to support your child’s independent reading:
• Check in periodically to ask questions about the plot, characters, and setting
• See if the book your child has selected is “just right” for him or her
• Ask if the book reminds your child of another book he or she has read
• Have him or her retell what has happened so far in the book
• Ask if your child would recommend the book to others—why or why not?
• Ask if your child can relate to any of the characters in the book
• Ask if your child can predict what might happen next
• Ask if the book makes your child make any connections to his or her personal life
• Encourage your child to read to you or a younger sibling
• Practice reading fluently (smooth reading that sounds like talking)
• If your child gets stuck on a word—ask what would make sense there? What would sound right?
• Remember that is okay and beneficial for your child to reread books over and over again as well as read books that are below your child's reading level. Easier books build confidence and fluency.
