APPLICATION FOR COMPUTER USE

and

INTERNET PERMISSION FORMS

2005-2006

Marshwood Middle School is pleased to offer you, the student, access to a computer network for Internet research and file-sharing. To apply for use of the school's computers and the Internet, you must obtain your parent's or guardian's permission. You need to have your parent or guardian sign the application form on the last page and RETURN TO YOUR TEACHER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Should your parent or guardian prefer that you not have Internet access, you still need to apply to use the school's computers; you just won't be able to use the Internet in your classroom, the computer lab, or the library. Students do not have email accounts or access to chat rooms or America Online while at school.

You MUST return the attached form before you can use any computer for any activity!

What is possible?

Using the Internet will let you explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums, and other information websites. Your family should be aware that some material on the Internet may contain items that are illegal, mean, inaccurate, or potentially offensive. While at school you will use Internet resources for classroom assignments. We believe that the benefits of using the Internet to gather information exceed the disadvantages. But your parents or guardian are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that you should follow when using media and information sources. Therefore, we support and respect each family's right to decide whether or not to apply for access. Parents and guardians should be aware that federal law requires all schools and libraries receiving federal funds to have Internet filtering in place by July 1, 2002. Marshwood Middle School is running a SonicWall filtering service for our RoadRunner connection. MTEAF (Maine Telecommunications Education Access Fund) is providing the filtering service for the MSLN (Maine State Library Network) Internet connection. If an inappropriate site is detected, that site will be denied access.

What is expected?

You are responsible for appropriate behavior on the school's computer network just as you are in a classroom or on the school playground. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General school rules for behavior and communications apply. It is expected that you will follow the specific rules set forth below. The use of the computers and the network is a privilege, not a right, and may be taken away if you don't follow the rules. You are responsible for your actions when using the school's computers. You should never to access, keep, or send anything that you would not want your parents or teachers to see.

What are the rules?

Privacy -- Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may need to look at your files and folders to keep the system working and to make sure that you are using the system responsibly.

Storage capacity -- You are expected to remain within allocated disk space and delete material which take up too much memory.

Illegal copying -- You should never download or install any commercial software, shareware, or freeware onto network drives or disks, unless you have written permission from the Network Administrator. This includes CD's from home. Nor should you copy other people's work or intrude into other people's files.

Inappropriate materials or language -- No swears, mean, or impolite language should be used nor should materials be accessed which are not in line with the rules of school behavior. A good rule to follow is never view, send, or access materials which you would not want your teachers and parents to see. Should you come across such material by accident, you should tell your teacher immediately.

Here are your guidelines:

These are guidelines to follow to prevent the loss of computer or network privileges at School:

1. Do not use a computer to harm other people or their work.

2. Do not damage the computer or the network in any way.

3. Do not interfere with the operation of the network by installing illegal software, shareware, or freeware.

6. Do not share your password with another person.

7. Do not waste limited resources such as disk space or printing capacity.

8. Do not trespass in anothers folders, work, or files.

9. Do notify an adult immediately, if by accident, you encounter materials which violate the rules of appropriate use.
