It's a Winner, Maria!

Maria Christian, 7W student, recently entered a "My Favorite Teacher" contest with Barnes and Noble and won with the following poem about her 6th grade science teacher, Mr. Carson. Congratulations to both of you!

Star Light — A Tribute to Mr. Carson

By Maria Christian

I will always remember the day,
My teacher spilled the Milky Way.
The stars were spread across the floor
We tried to sweep them out the door,
But they came back to dance again,
Exploding with light (the light they bend)
You might think a class like this
Would be chaos, but it was bliss;
Stars brought down, stars humanized
He tore the heavens from the skies
My teacher opened up my eyes.
We started small, we ended huge,
My teacher showed us all the truth,
Cold nights spent staring at the black,
Cold nights feeling it stare back.
Burning in the starlit nights,
My dreams of stardust raw and new,
I dreamed them all because of you.
Mr. Carson, you let in the dark,
Revealing contrasts stiff and stark,
Your gentle humor left its mark.
The world is made of the smallest dots,
My teacher let us think our thoughts,
To learn without talking, to teach without words,
To create from a spark a flurry of birds.
He was the wind, we were the clouds,
We went far, because we were allowed.
The answer was there, trying to hide,
Mr. Carson would carefully guide,
Fledglings ready to take flight,
Soaring in the arctic night,
Guiding us with ... star light.

All are welcome to join the celebration at Barnes and Noble in Newington on Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. There will be cake, presents, flowers and peotry readings. Meet in the children's department.
